Character notes: Neva was born on the world of Harvest and followed in the footsteps of her aunt Agnes Whitestone by going to medical school. Her training was interrupted by the war with the Zatvians, however, when every able-bodied man or woman was ordered into combat. Neva and her fiance Devin manned a gunnery outpost on the moon of Mabon, until the attack that killed Devin and maimed Neva.

Neva was evacuated to a hospital in another system immediately before the final assault by the Zatvians. Harvest was utterly annihilated, reduced to a cinder scoured clean of all life, including all of Neva's family and friends except for Agnes. After two years of reconstructive surgery, Neva learned that Agnes had died, and was summoned to take her place on board the Exile. With nothing left to live for, Neva accepted the post. When Rat was discovered stowing away, the opportunity to treat him and later help him with his telepathic disability gave her a chance to focus on something outside of herself and her need for revenge. She ulimately received her doctorate from the main university of Waga Chun.

Like most of the people of Harvest, Neva is what we would call pagan, and worships the Goddess and God.
