Character notes: Marcus was born and spent most of his life on the world of New Breyers. After serving briefly in the military, he got married and had a child, Genevieve. After the marriage broke up, Marcus raised his daughter alone, supporting them both by teaching Ancient Literature at the local school.

Marcus' troubles began with the Zatvian occupation of New Breyers. Out of concern for Genevieve, who was only 12 standard years old at the time, he kept his head down and tried to continue to make a normal life as possible. Unfortunately, Genevieve caught the eye of the Zatvians, and was taken away to be part of their "Youth Advantage Program." Marcus was told that, so long as he collaborated, she would be kept safe and unharmed. This was of course a lie, although Marcus didn't realize the truth for several months, long enough for suspicions about him to reach the resistance. With no idea of what had happened to his daughter, Marcus left New Breyers and signed aboard the Exile, hoping to at least be able to fight the Zatvians who had taken her.

It wasn't until recently that he learned the girls taken for the Youth Advantage Program had been made in the killing machines known as the Furies. The thought of what his daughter has suffered--what she might be suffering--haunts him.
