The Ghost EaterThe Ghost Eater: The ghost eater began his existence as Tamaugua, a 19-year-old Ahkan'i. He was chosen to replace his village's old ghost eater, killed, and then resurrected. According to Ahkan'i tradition, he is no longer the person he was before his death, and thus has been stripped of his name and kin. Nevertheless, the ghost eater has lost none of the memories or attachments of his former life, rendering his undead existence a torment.

Description: The ghost eater is short, bronze-skinned, and has waist-length black hair. A skull tattoo superimposed over his features marks his status as ghost eater. He wears bone pins in his ears and a copper ring in his nose.

Gwendith Smithswife: Gwendith is a 37-year-old Rhylachan woman married to Beoch Smith. Her only daughter from her first marriage died three years ago; that horrific event triggered a series of visions which ultimately led to Gwendith's confinement in an insane asylum. Although she has since been released back into her husband's custody, she is kept continuously drugged to suppress her visions. In order to spare her from painful memories, Beoch recently moved with her to Fort Ironwood, where he works as smith for the garrison set to guard a native Sanctuary.

Description: Gwendith is tall, fair-skinned, and has long honey-colored hair that she usually wears in a braid.

Stands-in-Smoke: Stands-in-Smoke is a native woman from the Hut Sitter Sanctuary near Fort Ironwood. She is an angry young woman desperate to take action against Rhylachan oppression. Her tribe are the traditional enemies of the Ahkan'it.

No Tongue: No Tongue is Stands-in-Smoke's cousin, a gentle and easy-going mute.

Johann: Johann is the brother of Gwendith's first husband and the uncle of her dead child. Although he seldom sees his sister-by-marriage due to his footloose, gambler's life style, Johann cares deeply for Gwendith and is concerned over the changes he sees in her, particularly her recent loss of spirit.

Colonel Talys: Colonel Talys is the only Rhylachan who suspects that there may be more than madness behind Gwendith's visions. He has been gathering together Rhylachans who show evidence of possessing native Ways in the hopes of regaining the lost glory of the Wizards. His vision is to someday integrate all natives into Rhylachan civilization.
